Pad Mounted Transformer Configurations

Pad mount transformers come in a wide selection of configurations both electrically and mechanically. TEMCo can offer a pad mount transformer solution custom tailored to suit your needs.  Electrically, pad mount transformers may be offered in any voltage, phase or frequency which an application may demand.  Single and three phase pad-mounted transformers are typically designed for use in grade level and underground commercial and residential distribution systems where safety, reliability and aesthetics are especially important.

Indoor & Outdoor Pad Mount Transformers

Enclosure options for pad mount transformers are available in indoor (NEMA 1), outdoor (NEMA 3R, 4 and 12) and come in many different configurations in regard to connection and access types.   Pad mount transformers for indoor use under most circumstances, must be of dry type construction. For out door applications oil filled pad mount transformers are acceptable when required.

Pad Mounted Transformer Purchasing Guidelines

When purchasing a pad mounted transformer there are a few guidelines that you need to follow. Pad mounted transformers should have superior insulation and a quality sealing system. They should meet or exceed the ANSI/IEEE test standards C57.12 and C57.12.90 and other international standards.  Pad mounted transformers need built to be in a sealed-tank oil preservation system which protects the interior from the environment.  The outside should have electrostatically applied powder paint finish, often with a green polyurethane top coat.  For security reason they should have a three-point latching door on all pad mounted transformers.

Pad Mounted Transformer Placement

On placement of a pad mounted transformers you will have to check with the local county and city ordinances for guidelines.  Common restrictions are that the front of the transformer must be free of any obstructing material so that it is clearly visible and the top of the transformer must be completely unobstructed.  Plants and fencing can be placed around the two sides and back of the transformers but you will have to provide a 3 foot clearance.  Do not put pad mounted transformers near trees, because trees planted within 15’ of the transformer may require removal if tree roots or foliage hinder service or maintenance of the transformer.
